Aromatherapy Beyond the Bottle
Essential Oil Chemistry, Safety & Responsible Use
Service Description
Essential oils are more than pretty smells in little amber bottles. Understanding how to use them responsibly starts with understanding what they actually are, how they interact with the body, and why the chemistry of an oil matters. This mid-level aromatherapy class will take you beyond basic essential oil uses and into the science behind aromatherapy. We’ll begin with a brief look at the olfactory system and how our sense of smell communicates with the brain, followed by a quick overview of the integumentary system and why the skin matters when we’re using essential oils topically. We’ll also introduce organoleptic testing—using our senses to evaluate essential oils and develop a better understanding of their aroma, characteristics, and quality. From there, we’ll dive into essential oil chemistry, including common chemical families and how different constituents contribute to an oil’s characteristics, therapeutic actions, and safety considerations. We’ll also discuss what therapeutic actions are, how aromatherapists use those actions when choosing oils, and why understanding an oil’s chemistry can be much more useful than simply memorizing a list of “oils for this” and “oils for that.” Then we’ll put all of that knowledge into practice by taking a closer look at the safety, properties, and practical uses of 10 common essential oils. We’ll discuss appropriate applications, dilution, contraindications, potential risks, and how to make informed choices rather than assuming that because something is natural, it must automatically be safe. This is a mid-level course, so some familiarity with essential oils is helpful. That said, you absolutely do not need any aromatherapy knowledge to attend. If you have a genuine love of learning and want to understand the why behind essential oil use, you’re welcome here. Come curious. Leave knowing what’s actually in the bottle—and what to do with that knowledge.
